Sebastião Salgado
Former Brazilian economist turned photojournalist, Sebastião Salgado, was born on February 8th, 1944 in Aimorés, Brazil. After choosing to abandon his economist career he began working as a social documentary photographer for various agencies before starting his own. This began in Paris, but later expanded to many countries around the world. He is well known for capturing workers in less developed nations, in order to tell a story. One of his most famous pictures is of a gold mine in Brazil, known as Serra Pelada. Describing his career his says, “Each of my stories is about globalization and economic liberalization: a sample of the human condition on the planet today.” Salgado has traveled over 120 countries capturing many lives, and unveiling the mystery of people around the world. He photographed workers in countries like India, Guatemala, Ethiopia and Brazil to name a few. In fact, in 1986 his work was presented in books such as Other Americas. After many years of recognition, Salgado is now an honorary member of the Academy of Arts and Sciences in the United States. As a whole, Salgado’s portfolio presented various landscapes, wildlife, and communities.
